A Hit and a Miss!

This 1966 title has some great cookie recipes. I haven't braved the candymaking again yet.

The first I made, is called "Double Peanut Butter Cookies" from the "Teen Winners" section.

They did not hold together like the picture (Below) so I think maybe butter would be better than shortening. Either way these were delicious, so I'm calling them a hit. My peanut butter loving Dad really really liked these.

1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 creamy peanut butter (plus more to put in cookies)

1/4 cup light corn syrup

1 tablespoon milk

Sift together dry ingredients. Cut in shortening and peanut butter till mixture resembles coarse meal. Blend in syrup and milk. Shape into 2-inch roll; chill. Slice 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. (Good luck with this!) Place half the slices on ungreased cookie sheet; spread each with 1/2 teaspoon peanut butter. Cover with remaining slices; seal edges with fork. Bake at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes.

Here's a picture from the book, and then mine. I wish I had glasses like those!

Now, on to the biggest disaster I've yet encountered in the kitchen - and that's saying something!

Grape Jam Pie from Betty Crocker's Pie and Pastry Cookbook, c1968, was disgusting. The ingredients are: Pastry for a 9-inch two crust pie; 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1 jar of whole grape preserves (I had grape preserves, I could not find whole grape stuff), 2 tablespoons butter or margarine.

Amy's note: If you want grape soup so badly, simply put these ingredients in a pot on the stove and heat it up.

Here are the pictures - ugh ugh ugh! Yes, of course my son put a smiley face on it before it went into the oven. I made my husband dish it up, as I was afraid when I took it out and the top crust was wobbling.

That is a great idea. I'm going to steal your phrase and label my next pie attempt that goes wrong (probably next week) Pies Gone Wild...
Those cookies would have worked with grape jelly inside or melted chocolate, too. Or maybe I should just dip little smoked sausages in it, eh? :)
