Treasure Trove of Cookbooks

Yes, I will get to that freelance project that is due tomorrow! But first - I had to go through the cookbooks my coworker brought me. There are many gems in there, including the original Betty Crocker's Cooky Book (correct spelling), the Better Homes and Gardens picture cookbook and more.

There is even a 1947 Chicago Tribune newspaper section with a Mary Meade column for refrigerator dough and mention of a prize winning $5 recipe. One of my other cookbooks has a collection of those winners. There are also some hilarious ads in the newspaper section, including one for Dr. Caldwell's Senna Laxative that 'pulls the trigger on lazy innards'. That ad has a picture of a person in real distress.

Moving on to the "What Shall I Cook Today?" cookbook from the Spry company, with no year given. Notice it advertises 'healthful' recipes.

OK - the first section is on deep frying, starting with doughnuts and fritters. Here's the delicious sounding recipe for Celery Fritters:
2 eggs, beaten

2 cups cooked celery, cut in pieces

2 tablespoons parsley, chopped fine

3/4 teaspoon salt

Dash of pepper

1/2 teaspooon soda

1 teaspoon warm water

1/2 cup fine bread crumbs

Mix beaten eggs, celery, parsley, salt, and pepper...Dissolve soda in warm water; add to celery mixture...Add bread crumbs and shape mixture into cakes...Fry in deep Syrp (375 degrees) until golden brown. Drain on absorbent paper...Makes 12 fritters.

"Serve with a savory red tomato sauce and a light sprinkling of chopped chives."

Who's hungry?

I thought you said you only added a little bit here. There is so much good info, I need to come back and reread it. Keep going....slower.

Amy, Those celery fritters would have been great if you'd just added some chopped-up clams or oysters! Pam

I suppose almost anything deep-fried is good, but celery? And "healthful"? Hilarious!
