This is from my Southern Heritage set, the Celebrations volume. It has 4 pages devoted to May Day. One, pictured here, is a fancy picnic type event for May Queen crownings, etc. My Mother was a May Queen at her Catholic school when she was young, with the pole and ribbon and everything.
For the next week starting tomorrow, I will devote the blog to actual good to eat recipes which are favorites of my Mother. One exception will be on Friday, May 8, when a favorite author team of mine, Evelyn David, will talk about their new one Murder Takes the Cake, complete with recipe.
Under the May Day Box Supper, this cookbook features meat turnovers (scary), Banana Peanut salad (also weird) and some delicacies. This one got my attention:
Coconut Fudge
2 cups sugar
1 cup whipping cream
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 cup flaked coconut
When I was young, a neighborhood friend and I gathered flowers and dropped them on other neighbor's doorsteps. We'd ring the bell and leave on May 1. Anyone heard of this tradition today, or would the 'no solicitor' signs preclude it?

When I was little my mom would have us gather flowers and put them in strawberry baskets (those plastic green ones strawberries would come in at the grocery store), which we'd woven ribbon through. Then we would bring them to my grandmother's house and leave them on her door handle. It seems like a charming tradition that should be revived!
