Labor Day Party

We are having an open house today for a few family members and neighbors, to show off the house in its vintage glory before we update it. So I went to my Complete Holiday Cookbook from Favorite Recipes Press. I believe it's from the 60's.
They have a Family Reunion menu for Labor Day which included English Pea Casserole Special and Mince Cream Pie. Perhaps that's for folks who don't like their families.
Then, the book suggested a Barber Shop Quartet Dessert Party. I put the photo here. That menu includes three things: Pineapple-Cranberry Punch, Barber Pole Parfait, and Cranberry-Upside Down Cake. The parfait is layers of vanilla pudding and jellied cranberry sauce. I can think of about five other things with red that would be much tastier, including strawberries, chocolate dyed red, raspberries, etc. The cake uses peach halves, more cranberry sauce, brown sugar and yellow cake mix. Help.
My husband said we need to offer the modern equivalent - the Rapper Party, with Pumped Up Bling Parfait, Upside-Down Backwards Hat Cake, Eye Candy, Master Mix Your Own Chex Mix. Pretty funny.
Tomorrow we will have guest blogger author Norm Cowie, funnyman and expert grillman. It's going to be delicious!
