We will go back to the guest blogging tomorrow, but I had to interject with a Mardi Gras recipe. I adore Mardi Gras - the food, the revelry - er, that is, from the Illinois perspective. I've not had the pleasure of being in NO during the celebrations, though I've been there several times for library conferences.
Southern Living Southern Heritage Celebrations volume actually has a few MG menus. This is the one for the King Rex Cocktail Party:
Absinthe Frappe
Bloody Mary
New Orleans Milk Punch
Mimosa
Negroni
Ojen Cocktail
Er, no food. Sounds like fun at least until the next day. Might want to add some King Cake! I have several right now as I have a Spring Holidays show tonight covering MG, St. Pat's, Easter and Passover, at the Prospect Heights Public Library.
Here's the recipe for NO Milk Punch. It actually sounds pretty good:
3/4 cup whipping cream
2 tablespoons plus 1 tsp. brandy, chilled
1 tsp. superfine sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
Ground nutmeg
Combine whipping cream, brandy, sugar, and vanilla; stir well. Pour into a chilled glass and sprinkle with nutmeg. Yield: 1 serving.
For real? One serving. Ah, well, it might be worth it.
How are you celebrating today?

Et-toi! I celebrated Fat Tuesday with some chocolate Rice Krispy treats. Not very traditional, but it's what I had on hand!
I agree, there needs to be some King Cake to go with all that alcohol. Drinking on an empty stomach is a sure way to wake up in the gutter with nothing on but Mardi Gras beads!
