Ice Creams and Cool Drinks

Here's #17 in the Good Housekeeping pamphlet cookbook series: Ice Creams & Cool Drinks. Doesn't that cover look delicious? I found this one for $1 and knew it would have some gems in it. I wasn't wrong.

Under the "Toddler" section:
Prune Shake
1 refrigerated can strained prunes (baby pack)
1/3 cup refrigerated orange juice (as opposed to?)
1 cup cold milk
Pinch salt (and the stomach begins to turn)
1 tsp. fresh, frozen or canned lemon juice
1 tablesp. sugar
1 big scoop vanilla ice cream
Mix prunes, orange juice and milk. Add salt, lemon juice, sugar and ice cream. Blend thoroughly with egg beater. Top with twist of orange peel. Makes 2 large, or 4 small servings.

And then under "Milk Coolers" I found:
Prune Spoon-Up
1 cup pitted, cooked prunes (Thank goodness they told us to pit these.)
1 cup cold milk
1 cup crushed ice
In electric blender, combine all ingredients. Blend about 30 sec., or until smooth. Serve at once (before your guests can run away) in glasses, with spoons. Makes 2 or 3 servings.

Today is my Mother's 77th birthday, and the prune recipes are in her honor. She laughs pretty hard at these, then begs me to stop.

I don't think even in 1958 that folks found these appealing. Who thinks of prunes and ice cream? Really, who thinks of prunes at all? Can you just see a Throwdown with Bobby Flay on prune recipes?

There are good recipes in this cookbook too, behind these prune ones, and the pineapple mint sundae, but I'm not up for more scary surprises in this one this week. I think I will pull out the holiday cookbooks and put up some Valentine fun for the rest of the week.

I'm envious of your Good Housekeeping collection! I swear, you need to add these to the Flickr pool for Vintage Cookbooks

Er, that's a librarian thing. When I start collecting something, I have to get all in the series. Except if it's really expensive. I travel with a list of holes in my cookbook series. My hubby is taking me cookbook - um - antique shopping for V Day and I'll have the list!

You're right about Flickr, and I've started. I appreciate that idea - you'll be saving my hard drive when I can delete some photos!
