Vintage Children's Party

Am I the only one scared by this picture? This is a 'Children's Party' from the 1972 Recipes for Entertaining. Those are supposed to be Mother Goose and Drummer Boy characters. I also like the red tree in the corner with red ornaments. Let's get the party started!
Cherry Shakes
1 3-oz. package cherry-flavored gelatin
1 21 oz. can cherry pie filling
1 quart vanilla ice cream
Milk (about 8 cups) (seriously)
Pour one cup boiling water and gelatin into blender container. Cover and blend till gelatin dissolves. Add pie filling.  Cover and blend till smooth.  Chill. At serving time, divide cherry mixture evenly between 12 - 14 12-oz. glasses.  Add a scoop of ice cream; stir to muddle.  Fill glasses with milk; stir to mix.  If desired, serve with peppermint stick stirrers. (Cherry and peppermint - really?) Makes 12 - 14 servings.
Yikes.

There are a ton of weird children's parties in my collection. Get ready for more...

Can't decide between "surreal" or "scary!"

Oh my gosh! I've actually seen that picture somewhere before... I think my grandmother must have owned that cookbook... those costumes are seriously disturbing...
